For this month’s Board Member Spotlight, we spoke with Dominique Fernandez, Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations at I Am Boundless. Dominique is serving as the VP of Member Communications of our chapter this year. During her interview, she told us a bit about herself and her experience with AFP.
Q: Tell us a little about your organization. Mission? Population you serve? What do you like most about working there?
Boundless is a state-wide organization that provides person-centered services empowering youth, adults and families with intellectual and developmental disabilities and behavioral health challenges. From vocational habilitation and educational support to residential services and primary care, our approach to whole-person care celebrates each individual and empowers them to become active participants in the communities where they live, work, and play.
Q: How long have you been an AFP member, and what has your involvement been?
I’ve been an AFP member since 2019.
Q: What do you consider the most valuable part of your AFP membership?
Without a doubt, the education and networking opportunities through AFP have been the most valuable part of my membership. My start in philanthropy is pretty common—I began as a data entry specialist with zero fundraising experience, and when I transitioned into a fundraiser role, I quickly realized I didn’t fully understand the fundamentals. My first real introduction to AFP was the Fundamentals of Fundraising course, which I attended through a scholarship, and it gave me the structure and foundational knowledge I didn’t even realize I was missing. Just as important were the people I met. I built relationships with peers I still turn to today for advice, collaboration, and the occasional venting session. Seven years later, after taking countless courses and growing alongside an incredible network of colleagues, I can honestly say that joining AFP was one of the best decisions I’ve made for my career.
Q: How long have you been in fundraising, and how did you get into it?
I’ve been in fundraising since 2014, when I started as a data entry specialist at the Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland. I always knew I wanted to build a career in the nonprofit world, so I was grateful to get my foot in the door.
Q: What is your favorite part about living/working in Columbus? Favorite place to go?
One of my favorite parts about living and working in Columbus is the coffee shop scene. Since I work remotely, I love being able to post up at different spots around the city. It’s a great way to stay productive while still feeling connected to the community.
Q: Tell us a fun fact about you that other AFP members wouldn’t know.
I’ve entered more eating contests than most people, which may sound impressive until you remember most people have entered exactly zero. I’m basically out here skewing the statistics one pie at a time.
Q: What has been your biggest success in your career?
One of my biggest successes has been becoming a trusted resource for my peers. Being able to offer guidance and advice has been especially meaningful and rewarding in my career
Q: What has been your biggest learning opportunity in your career?
One of the biggest learning opportunities in my career has been participating in donor meetings. My first few were nerve-wracking, but over time I’ve learned that being a strong partner isn’t just about presenting confidently—it’s about listening and building genuine relationships. Each meeting continues to teach me how to communicate effectively, respond thoughtfully, and adapt to different personalities, reinforcing that there’s always more to learn about being a trusted and effective partner.
Q: Where would you take your dream vacation?
That would be New Zealand, trekking the Milford Track in New Zealand followed by a tour exploring Middle-earth.
Q: What is one thing your organization does really well?
Welcomes innovation and empowers team members to bring in new ideas.
Q: Do you have a favorite book/blog/podcast/etc. that has been very helpful in your career that you’d like to recommend?
The Art of Gathering by Priya Parker
