Position Overview

Serving as the lead fundraiser the Senior Director of Development will understand the mission, needs and value proposition of the College of Law and build relationships with prospective donors to increase philanthropic support. Donors such as alumni, friends, and/or grateful patients will be identified by listening for opportunities to align their interests and passions with opportunities to donate to the university.

The aim of the role is to actively manage a portfolio of prospective donors to be asked for gifts of $100,000 and above. Preparation for the “ask” will include creative and strategic utilization of resources to determine the prospective donor’s capacity for giving, build their interest, raise their sights, sustain their engagement and obtain a gift. Success in the position will be guided by annual metrics such as number of monthly meetings, number of gift commitments, and dollars raised. Central resources such as a robust donor database and reporting and analytics tools exist to help the role achieve goals and manage an allocated budget.

The Senior Director reports to both the Assistant Vice President of Development in the Office of Advancement and the Dean of the college and leads a team of professionals comprised of development and Engagement/alumni relations professionals.   The position operates with a high degree of independence to make decisions, solve problems, negotiate, and adapt to shifting priorities. This position is also a critical partner to the Dean on all plans and strategies that advance the development and alumni relations goals of the college.  Expectations include stellar communications and interactions with constituents, collaboration with colleagues across Advancement and the university, College of Medicine, and Wexner Medical Center, diplomacy, and discretion. This role requires frequent workweek travel including approximately one or two overnight trips per month, regular in-state travel and occasional evening and weekend work.

Duties and Responsibilities

75% – Fundraising

Identifies, qualifies, and cultivates a portfolio of prospective major gift donors. Pursues connections and discovers donor values, capacity, interests and passions. Ensures quality and positive momentum within assigned portfolio to convert prospects to donors. Builds context for gift proposals, develops and implements strategic gift solicitations. Maximizes opportunities to steward donors to further enhance relationships

20% – Management

Provides management of team members through leadership, coaching and mentorship to develop fundraising skills.  Contributes to Advancement team strategies and helps drive initiatives through completion. Provides support for the continued trajectory of increase in new fundraising activity and philanthropic receipts to achieve college goals while driving enhancement of current and creation of new innovative programs.

5% – Miscellaneous

Completes special projects and performs other duties as assigned.

Metrics and Collaboration:

The annual performance of all fundraisers at Ohio State is measured by the number of qualifications, cultivations, solicitations and commitments/dollars raised the individual accrues over each fiscal year.  Each fundraiser may have different expectations regarding these figures based upon, but not limited to, their experience level, unit size, prospect portfolio, past performance, etc.  Goal setting is done with the individual’s manager prior to each fiscal year to assure transparency, consistency and alignment.

All fundraisers at Ohio State are encouraged and expected to collaborate with their colleagues throughout the University, Medical Center and within the College of Law Collaboration efforts can include but are not limited to: working with another academic unit or the Medical Center to collaborate on a gift from a donor, collaborating internally with the research office, faculty members and leadership to learn and discuss priorities.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education/experience.
  • Six years of relevant experience with at least four years of professional fundraising experience (building relationships towards philanthropic end through making calls, conducting face-to-face appointments, creating and presenting proposals, closing gifts) and two years of related experience in marketing, sales, public relations, financial advisement, account management or related field with emphasis on donor cultivation, solicitation and relationship cultivation of individuals/businesses.
  • At least three years of management experience.

All fundraisers at Ohio State are encouraged and expected to collaborate with their colleagues across the institution and can be counted as ‘Secondary’ on a gift in the solicitation, commitment and dollars raised phases of the development cycle.  A secondary fundraiser can be considered when a team is working on a multi-unit gift, the fundraiser is a subject matter expert in an area critical to the solicitation or a fundraiser has a pre-existing, meaningful relationship with the donor and their participation helps move the gift forward.

Performance Objectives

First month

  •  Become familiar with the overall structure, resources, and processes of university development.
  • Develop an understanding of the College of Engineering’s priorities.
  • Build relationships with college, unit, and central Advancement partners including prospect development, estate and gift planning, corporate relations, donor relations, foundation relations, development communications, and annual giving.

First 2-3 months

  • Begin to actively fundraise by meeting with existing and prospective donors.
  • Implement lead generation and cultivation strategies, engaging appropriate partners as necessary.
  • Incorporate best practice solicitation strategies for portfolio assignments.

First 12 months

  • Continue building a portfolio of qualified prospects.
  • Move the prospects through the donor engagement process.
  • Continue working towards meeting team and individual performance goals/metrics by soliciting and closing major gifts.

This role is responsible for developing and implementing the fundraising strategy for the Central Ohio market, with specific focus on Grant Medical Center, Doctors Hospital, Pickerington Methodist Hospital, and affiliated medical centers in central Ohio.

This position reports to the Vice President for Philanthropy. This position will work in collaboration with foundation colleagues, hospital leaders and volunteers and is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and implementation of fundraising programs for the market region.

Fundraising– Manages a portfolio of major gift prospects for the respective area. Implements effective process to move prospects through cycle of philanthropy. Coordinates and collaborates with system-wide philanthropy team to assist in implementation of fundraising programs, including: Annual fundraising; Corporate and foundation fundraising; Grateful patient programs; Planned giving; and events. Manages capital campaigns and/or collaborates on related system wide Foundation campaigns.

20%:

Development Board Relations – Serves as a Foundation liaison with the assigned volunteer development boards; provides a link between care site or service line plans and initiatives with overall system fundraising strategy. Identifies potential board members and engages current boards.

10%:

Care site Strategy – Serves on executive team related to area of service. Develops a fundraising strategy and plan for assigned area that supports the Foundation’s overall fundraising strategy and objectives. Provides input and support to system-wide fundraising strategy and planning.

10%:

External Relationship Management – Develops relationships with the philanthropic and business communities associated with the area of service. Manages and cultivates relationships to achieve the full fundraising potential of the community. Supports the Foundation and system leadership in relationship building. Participates in community events to represent the organization and to build relationships.

Leadership – Coordinates and collaborates with Foundation and other system-wide teams e.g., marketing, finance to develop and implement fundraising programs and practices. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

BA/BS in business management, human behavior sciences, philanthropy or related field

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE

Deep knowledge of fundraising practices and technical skills, recognized as an expert within their field and requires in depth and/or breadth of expertise in own job discipline and board knowledge of other job disciplines within the organization function (e.g., philanthropic models and practices, major gift practices, annual fundraising practices, direct mail programs, social media fundraising techniques, capital campaign practices, planned giving programs and practices, legal implications of fundraising).

Excellent interpersonal communication skills including the ability to represent the Foundation to influential business and philanthropic community leaders; writing, presentation, and negotiation skills.

Graduate level degree in philanthropic studies, psychology, sociology, business administration, healthcare administration, or a related discipline

Job Description Summary:

The Sr. Philanthropy Database Administrator is responsible for managing, maintaining, and cultivating all data and reporting needs, and data strategy for the OhioHealth Foundation. They serve as the subject matter expert for the database and use of best practices.

Functions include, but are not limited to:

• Managing data integrity for the Foundation.
• Continuing to drive efficiencies within existing (and new) business practices by leveraging technical knowledge of the available tools and processes.
• Creating data structures and strategies to support foundation’s evolving needs.
• Producing timely and relevant data analysis.
• Creating and maintaining a variety of simple and complex reports using multiple tools, such as Power BI, Access, Crystal etc.
o Expanding and building upon the Foundations current dashboards.
o Creating custom reports to report monthly performance metrics.
o Creating Ad-hoc reports as needed.
• Proactively meeting with Foundation staff to build relationships and review data needs.
• Importing and exporting data as well as pulling accurate data lists.
• Presenting complex findings and data in a clear and concise manner, in written, visual and verbal formats with a sharpened focus on data story telling.
• Performing database trainings, maintain training materials and ensuring comprehension with Foundation team members.
• Working with outside vendors and internal technical resources in the design and implementation of the database.

The Donor Relations Manager assists in the planning and implementation of plans for the ongoing cultivation of donors capable of major and/or deferred gifts. They conduct exploratory meetings with donors and prospects to determine capacity for giving and cultivates relationships with donors at a personal level. The Donor Relations Manager provides ongoing opportunities for contact with past and current donors.

The Donor Relations Manager is responsible for the identification and qualification of major and planned gift prospects and assists in cultivating and soliciting donors through meetings, trips, events, and other activities. They will move prospects capable of gifts of higher amounts to the prospect pool for management by senior fundraising staff and integration into the Moves Management process. They will work on a variety of activities including providing detailed program information to prospects and drafting personalized correspondence and acknowledgments. They use the Conservancy’s donor database to update donor information, produce reports, perform analysis, and track and cultivate donors. The Donor Relations Manager understands the basics of the influencing factors on donors and the types of assets that may be used for the donor’s giving; applies knowledge to interactions with donors and gift asks. They will capitalize on matching gift opportunities.

•    Act independently within broad program goals to prioritize tasks in the absence of specific instructions and exercise independent judgment to identify and solve problems.
•    Annual fundraising goal of $250,000 or more, along with a goal for bequest notifications and substantiations.
•    Does not supervise any staff but may manage work of peers on departmental project teams.
•    Ensure compliance with TNC policies and procedures and external (donor/legal/IRS) requirements.
•    Financial responsibility includes meeting fundraising objectives, working within a budget, and negotiating and contracting with vendors.
•    Discover new prospects to build a portfolio of 75 – 125 individual donors with the capacity to make a gift up to $25,000 once the portfolio is developed and be responsible for 125 visits and 500 moves annually.

Assistant/Associate Director of Reunion and Class Giving

Work Schedule:
Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week plus evening and weekend activities and occasional travel.

Basic Function:
Manage a variety of initiatives including providing oversight of the Annual Fund’s class fundraising volunteer programs to secure leadership level and participatory gifts, with a focus on reunion fundraising for classes celebrating Reunion 0 through 45th.

Essential Job Functions:

Alumni Volunteer Fundraising Program Management: 80%

● Administer a volunteer program to expand class giving at all participation levels. Plan, coordinate, supervise and implement the various volunteer activities to reach fundraising goals and objectives for reunion classes and ensure these committees reach their full potential.

● Create and maintain volunteer fundraising training manuals and materials in collaboration with other Annual Fund staff.

● Develop metrics to set and manage volunteer/class engagement goals for all committees; prepare and monitor reports on the progress of volunteer activities and determine whether to alter strategy based on results; and act as a champion for fundraising goals.

● In partnership with Major Gift Officers, Annual Fund and the office of Alumni and Family Engagement staff, identify, recruit and steward volunteer leaders and committee members to develop strong committees focused on fundraising. Communicate frequently to coordinate solicitations and adjust strategies for high-level donors.

● Manage Volunteer Network Fundraising (VNF), the web-based volunteer portal, to assign prospects to volunteers and track outreach activities accordingly for each class o Serve as division contact for staff training and campaign oversight for VNF

● Support all volunteers through regular contact including personal visits, e-mail, and phone.

● Work collaboratively with the Advancement Communications and Marketing team to develop marketing communications strategy for class reunions and events.

● Maintain a high level of attention to detail as it relates to managing solicitation reports shared with volunteers, the creation of written solicitation strategies with volunteers, accomplishing projects and tasks in the prescribed time frame, and keeping colleagues engaged and informed as needed concerning program strategies.

● Oversee the updating of databases to monitor, discern and track the appropriate activities with various populations — such as volunteer recruitment, committee assignments, and donors.

● Maintain a portfolio of volunteers for cultivation and solicitation in support of Advancement’s annual participation goals. Cultivate and solicit alumni via personal outreach.

Serve as Annual Fund liaison with the Office of Alumni and Family Engagement Event Planning: 15%

● Plan and implement a fall Volunteer Summit involving Denison Annual Fund volunteers, working in conjunction with the Office of Alumni and Family Engagement.

● Plan and implement an Annual Fund volunteer recognition program, including a presidential reception during Reunion Weekend, to recognize volunteers and leadership donors.

● Plan and implement class-specific engagement activities and events between reunions in conjunction with Annual Fund staff and the Office of Alumni and Family Engagement.

Other duties & expectations: 5%

● Attend and staff events including the Fall Big Red Alumni/Parent Weekend, Commencement, Reunion Weekend and Volunteer Summit.

● Collaborate with other College offices to meet Denison’s fund-raising objectives.

Minimum Qualifications:

Assistant to the Director, Annual Funds

Work Schedule:

This is a full-time hourly position, 35 hours per week; office hours 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday – Friday. Occasional night and weekend work, including but not limited to Reunion Weekend and Big Red Weekend.

Basic Function:

Reporting/Budgetary/Statistical support: 20%
Maintain and compile statistical data and reports on the program using Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge NXT database. Prepare monthly reports and letters, and provide statistical information to staff and volunteers as requested. Assist the Director with preparing regular Annual Fund Chair Reports, letters to Donors and other stewardship activities as requested. Create presentation materials, and correspondence with volunteers, alumni, staff, vendors, and peer schools. Create and/or review external reports, charts, remarks, correspondence, and presentations and distribute, as necessary, for the Director. Run reports to maintain and prevent data inconsistencies. Submit Annual Fund purchase order request and invoices for payment through the e-procurement system. Reconcile Annual Fund staff and office monthly expenses. Monitor and provide reports on budgets. Manage the Annual Fund budget and submit budget transfer requests and journal entries to the Controller’s office as needed. Maintain files of contracts with outside vendors and ensure that scopes of work are current and updated as needed.

Customer Service Responsibilities: 10%
Provide frontline 800-line service, including answering calls and following up on alumni requests and concerns, as part of the administrative team. Respond to 800-line voice mail and e-mail on a rotating schedule. Assist team in answering other staff lines.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent. A minimum of four years of relevant administrative experience. Outstanding communication, and organizational skills, with strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
Strong problem solving and decision-making skills.
Computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite tools.
Highly motivated and able to multitask, prioritize projects and meet task deadlines.

Position Overview

The Ohio State University’s  Connections Team is hiring multiple new Assistant Directors of Development to focus on leadership annual giving. Assistant Directors broaden the community of donor support for the university and its Wexner Medical Center by establishing relationships with donors, alumni and volunteers, soliciting leadership-level annual gifts targeting $1,000-$99,999, and identifying future major gift donors to the university.

The Assistant Directors will meet with and solicit a high volume of undiscovered prospective donors and be responsible for proactively building and managing a large portfolio of active donors. This role requires frequent travel including approximately two overnight trips per month plus regular in-state travel and is responsible for managing an allocated budget. This position will utilize reporting and analysis tools to determine direct fundraising effectiveness, activities and strategies and will be measured on established metrics to include meetings, dollars and major gift referrals.

Reporting to a Senior Director of Development (Leadership Annual Giving), these positions operate with a high degree of independence, decision-making capabilities and judgment. The ability to maintain confidentiality, negotiate and be organized and analytical are a must. Assistant Directors of Development are expected to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills (including tact, diplomacy, and discretion) when interacting with donors, alumni and volunteers and create and maintain collaborative relationships with colleagues from a variety of disciplines across Advancement and the university. Successful candidates will be excellent verbal and written communicators who have the ability to adapt to shifting priorities and demands.

Duties and Responsibilities

90% – Fundraising

Meets activity and revenue goals by planning, managing, and maintaining an aggressive travel schedule; raises unrestricted leadership annual gifts to fund core university priorities, particularly for the colleges and units; effectively communicates progress of cultivation efforts and results of visits to appropriate personnel. Efficiently manages a large portfolio of leadership annual giving prospects; qualifies prospects for potential major gift capacity and interest; provides appropriate background on prospects to be assigned to major gift portfolios. Proactively cultivates and solicits Ohio State donors, alumni, volunteers and grateful patients capable of making leadership annual gifts to the university with a target of approximately 150 meetings per year. Conducts appropriate stewardship activities to further enhance the relationship between assigned donors and The Ohio State University; initiates and maintains contact to promote positive donor relations.

5% Collaboration

Creates and maintains working relationships with colleagues from a variety of disciplines across Advancement, the university and Wexner Medical Center; works in tandem with  Connections teammates to provide a central service to other colleges/units and healthcare service lines; acts as a liaison between a prospective major gift donor and appropriate officer

5% Miscellaneous

Contributes to Advancement by fostering and exhibiting teamwork; participates on internal committees/workgroups as appropriate; performs other duties as assigned.

Performance Objectives

During first 3 months

  • Begin onboarding program with cohort of peers and get to know colleagues.
  • Learn about advancement’s structure, resources, priorities, and core values.

Metrics and Collaboration

The annual performance of all fundraisers at Ohio State is measured by the number of qualifications, cultivations, solicitations, commitments and dollars raised the individual accrues over each fiscal year.  Each fundraiser may have different expectations regarding these figures based upon, but not limited to, their experience level, unit size, prospect portfolio, past performance, etc.  Goal setting is done with the individual’s manager prior to each fiscal year to assure transparency, consistency and alignment.

All fundraisers at Ohio State are encouraged and expected to collaborate with their colleagues across the institution and can be counted as ‘Secondary’ on a gift in the solicitation, commitment and dollars raised phases of the development cycle.  A secondary fundraiser can be considered when a team is working on a multi-unit gift, the fundraiser is a subject matter expert in an area critical to the solicitation or a fundraiser has a pre-existing, meaningful relationship with the donor and their participation helps move the gift forward.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education/experience
  • Two (2) years of professional fundraising experience or professional transferable experience (i.e., managing relationships with required measurable output, making calls, conducting face-to-face appointments, creating and presenting proposals, and other fundamental elements of client relationship or sales-related activities)

With a particular focus on strengthening relationships with donors contributing major gifts, the senior consultant strategically and proactively collaborates with partners in colleges and units. The senior consultant also defines and implements individualized stewardship plans to deepen relationships with specific donors and provides exemplary service to donors and internal constituents.

Reporting to Advancement’s Director of Donor Experience, this position currently supervises two Donor Experience professionals focused on developing, executing and evaluating donor relations programs and projects to help ensure that those who contribute to the university feel appreciated and aware of the impact of their gifts. A hybrid work schedule (determined in conjunction with the AVP) is available and encouraged.

Excellent written and verbal skills, strong operational and organizational skills, exceptional interpersonal and managerial skills, and the ability to interact with diverse internal and external constituents at all levels are a must. Exceptional customer service skills are a must have, including the ability to think critically and independently solving complex problems. All of this in an environment that demands discretion and diplomacy.

Duties and Responsibilities

50% – With a particular focus on strengthening relationships with donors contributing major gifts, the senior consultant oversees and implements university-wide stewardship guidelines, programs, and events to express appreciation and show the impact of philanthropic support. Proactively partners with colleagues in the colleges and units to share best practices, identify opportunities for collaboration or shared resources, ensure efforts are aligned with university guidelines, and deliver consistent experiences to donors. Advises and consults on a range of donor relations and stewardship matters. Coordinates with various members of the university community to involve them in implementing stewardship activity. Prepares budgets and monitors expenses for specific stewardship initiatives or events. Evaluates and continuously improves programs and experiences. Tracks data and prepares summaries of stewardship activity and accomplishments.

20% – Responsible for defining, implementing, and monitoring individualized plans to provide personalized stewardship and deepen relationships with specific donors; facilitates strategy sessions and consults and collaborates with partners in central services and colleges/units about stewardship for individual donors. Provides excellent donor relationship services as a primary contact for donors and internal partners.

20% – Supervises staff; establishes and monitors goals, provides performance feedback and coaching, and supports professional development; completes annual performance management procedures; manages performance issues; is responsible for using independent, consistent and fair judgement in exercising authority; develops procedures, assigns and prioritizes work, and ensures that the resources needed to accomplish work are provided.

10% – Researches and responds to donor relations matters, exercises discretion and independent judgment to resolve complex issues. Leads, manages or participates in other projects and events as assigned

Performance Objectives

First month

  • Become familiar with the overall structure, resources, and processes of university development.
  • Develop an understanding of Donor Experience priorities for Ohio State.
  • Build relationships with college, unit, and central advancement partners including Donor Experience, Advancement Communications, and Donor Loyalty.

First 2-3 months

  • Begin to actively lead projects influencing the donor experience at Ohio State.
  • Deepen relationships with college, unit and central advancement partners.
  • Recommend professional development opportunities and focuses for the donor experience community.
  • With support, plan and implement a donor experience community event.

First 12 months

  • Lead and develop projects influencing the donor experience at Ohio State.
  • Lead professional development opportunities and establish priorities for the donor experience community.
  • Participate in professional development to continue learning best practices and strategies.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Six (6) years of relevant experience.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule to include occasional evenings, weekends and travel.

  • Experience in donor relations or similar field.
  • Experience in higher education advancement, particularly donor relations or stewardship.
