SUMMARY:   The Director of Development and Donor Engagement (Director) is responsible for designing, implementing and coordinating a development plan for an assigned pool of donors and potential donors. The Director will help to identify, qualify, cultivate and solicit support from individuals, alumni, parents, friends, faculty/staff, and others to fund immediate and long-term goals of the university.

The Director will be the lead donor relations manager for the Division, working closely with the Executive Director of Strategic Initiatives and the Vice President for Institutional Advancement to create and implement strategic stewardship and cultivations strategies, special projects, and events to generate financial support.

Reporting to the Executive Director of Development, the Director is responsible for understanding the needs and interests of major donors and potential donors in order to develop relationships between them and the university, resulting in support for the institution. The Director is required to travel throughout Ohio and may travel more broadly as needs arise.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Actively manage a portfolio of 200 to 250 assigned prospects and donors for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Proactively seek opportunities to generate new proposals based on donor interests and institutional priorities.
  • Solicit major gifts of $25,000 or more with an emphasis on gifts at the six- and seven-figure range designated for endowment, capital or program needs.
  • Write proposals for solicitation of own prospects and aid in the preparation of other proposals.
  • Participate in all aspects of the gift cycle:
  1. initiate contacts with potential donors;
  2. develop appropriate cultivation strategies for them, including working with volunteers;
  3. move potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure.
  • Sustain positive and mutually-rewarding relations between the University and its donors.
  • Partner with members of the University community to determine the best strategies for effective solicitation and stewardship of donors.
  • Maintain ongoing and active networking with internal and external constituencies – some of which may include: Westerville Otterbein Women’s Club, Friends organizations, and key initiatives on campus.
  • Manage special projects as it relates to donor cultivation and carry out fundraising priorities.
  • Accountable for developing and achieving fundraising goals, annual and long-term objectives for assigned portfolio.  Work within budgets to support those goals.
  • Work with University leadership, faculty/staff to create an understanding of the University’s programs and resources that can be leveraged for donor development and constituent engagement.
  • Collaborate with Alumni Relations and Family Engagement to identify prospects and implement engagement strategies to strengthen the major gift pipeline.
  • Manage and engage prospects in permanent stewardship.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director, develop and manage planned giving initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Executive Director of Strategic Initiatives, create and implement university-wide stewardship and cultivation strategy that includes, but is not limited to, high level cultivation events and special initiatives that further develop major giving pipeline.
  • Participate in special projects and other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director of Development and Donor Engagement may have supervisory responsibilities as needed for the Development Associate, in cooperation with the Executive Director, and possibly for student workers.

It is necessary for the candidate to possess the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Being detail oriented, well organized, focused and goal-oriented, with a high level of initiative and energy, is essential, as well as adept at problem solving and using judgment in situations requiring independent initiative and tact.

Director of Development and Donor Engagement interacts on behalf of the University with all of the University’s various constituencies. Must display a high level of maturity and personal integrity and ability to understand, develop, and sustain resilient and dynamic relationships with donors, colleagues, and senior management.

Broad knowledge of the principles of fundraising; ability to see and understand the objectives of development and individual giving, as well as, the Institutional Advancement division, and to integrate goals with those objectives; ability to initiate, analyze, monitor, evaluate and alter strategic advancement plans; ability to articulate the case for support so that individuals accept the institution’s goals.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Qualified candidates will minimally hold a Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university and have at least 2 years of non-profit experience. Candidate must have documented success at securing gifts $25,000 or larger.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must have a valid driver’s license.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: The ability to interact comfortably, tactfully, and effectively with varied internal and external constituencies is essential. Must demonstrate excellent verbal and writing skills including an exceptional command of grammatical rules and AP Style Guidelines. Must be able to project voice and do public speaking in both small and large group settings.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Must be competent in general math.

TECHNICAL SKILLS: Knowledge of general office procedures.  Must be able to use general office equipment, work in a complex customer relations management database, and willing to learn and employ new technologies.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment in unusual or new situations.  Must be able to work independently. Must retain confidential information, thus confidentiality and discretion are mandatory.

Summary and Scope of Role

The Development Officer is responsible for facilitating, building, and maintaining external relationships with both corporate and community donors and partners. The Development Officer works closely in collaboration with the Chief Advancement Officer, and the Director of Development to advance Marburn’s mission and reach both in the community and region. The Development Officer is responsible for executing against our guiding strategy and managing of Marburn’s corporate fundraising efforts and major donor cultivation. This includes leading our major gifts campaign, planned giving strategies, and cultivating all current and potential major donors within greater Columbus region. The focus of this role is primarily external facing within the region to identify and develop potential donors and strategic partnerships, and in addition to stewarding current corporate/major donors. The Development Officer serves on the Institutional Advancement Team. The Development Officer reports directly to the Director of Development.

• Responsible for writing and entering donor contact reports, with a disciplined and methodical approach in maintaining complete and accurate donor records

Qualifications and Skills

• A bachelor’s degree is required. An advanced degree is preferred.
• Proven experience in development and fundraising, preferably at a non-profit institution with an educational component. Individuals with a sales background may also be considered.

The Ohio State University’s Individual Philanthropic Strategy team (IPS) is hiring 6 new Assistant Directors of Development to focus on leadership annual giving. Assistant Directors broaden the community of donor support for the university and its Wexner Medical Center by establishing relationships with donors, alumni and volunteers, soliciting leadership-level annual gifts targeting $1,000-$99,999, and identifying future major gift donors to the university.

 

The Assistant Directors will meet with and solicit a high volume of undiscovered prospective donors and be responsible for proactively managing a large portfolio of active donors. This role requires frequent travel including approximately two overnight trips per month plus regular in-state travel and is responsible for managing an allocated budget. This position will utilize reporting and analysis tools to determine direct fundraising effectiveness, activities and strategies and will be measured on established metrics to include meetings, dollars and major gift referrals.

 

Reporting to a Director of Leadership Annual Giving, these positions operate with a high degree of independence, decision-making capabilities and judgment. The ability to maintain confidentiality, negotiate and be organized and analytical are a must. Assistant Directors of Development are expected to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills (including tact, diplomacy, and discretion) when interacting with donors, alumni and volunteers and create and maintain collaborative relationships with colleagues from a variety of disciplines across Advancement and the university. Metrics and Collaboration:

The annual performance of all fundraisers at Ohio State is measured by the number of qualifications, cultivations, solicitations, commitments and dollars raised the individual accrues over each fiscal year.  Each fundraiser may have different expectations regarding these figures based upon, but not limited to, their experience level, unit size, prospect portfolio, past performance, etc.  Goal setting is done with the individual’s manager prior to each fiscal year to assure transparency, consistency and alignment.

 

All fundraisers at Ohio State are encouraged and expected to collaborate with their colleagues across the institution and can be counted as ‘Secondary’ on a gift in the solicitation, commitment and dollars raised phases of the development cycle.  A secondary fundraiser can be considered when a team is working on a multi-unit gift, the fundraiser is a subject matter expert in an area critical to the solicitation or a fundraiser has a pre-existing, meaningful relationship with the donor and their participation helps move the gift forward.

 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education/experience
  • At least one year of professional fundraising experience or professional transferable experience (i.e., managing relationships with required measurable output, making calls, conducting face-to-face appointments, creating and presenting proposals, and other fundamental elements of client relationship or sales-related activities)

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • At least one year of professional fundraising experience raising the highest level of philanthropic gifts at an organization (preferably five or six figures and above)
  • At least one year of professional fundraising experience in higher education or a hospital/health care environment
  • Experience working in other advancement departments such as donor relations and stewardship, donor communications and/or alumni relations
  • Familiarity with the development function at Ohio State and knowledge of Ohio State’s donor database (TAS)

President, Foundation/Chief Development Officer

Summa Health seeks a visionary, and strategically-minded leader to assume the role of President, Foundation/Chief Development Officer. This role will be located at the Summa Health Corporate Office in Akron, Ohio.

The President of Summa Foundation and Summa Health Chief Development Officer (CDO) is the lead fundraising executive for Summa Health. In this role, the President/CDO provides visionary, strategic and operational leadership for the Summa Health Foundation, a not-for-profit foundation serving the mission of Summa Health.

As a member of the senior executive team, the President/CDO creates, plans, coordinates as appropriate, and supports the execution of successful initiatives in principal gifts, planned giving, grants and annual giving. The President/CDO passionately leads collaborative fundraising initiatives, identifies and supports system-wide implementation of best practices, and provides centralized development services to fulfill the philanthropic potential of the organization.

Key Essential Duties:

Strategic Planning– In conjunction with the President and CEO of Summa Health System and the Chairman of the Foundation Board of Directors, develops and updates strategic plan for the Foundation. The Foundation strategic plan will complement the system strategic plan. Objectives to achieve plan goals will be established annually and be reflected in the business/management plans and the annual budget.

Fundraising- Guides an energetic team that will develop plans to create proposal development strategies and implements them across individual, corporate, foundation and public sector resources. Prepares the Foundation for launch and successful execution of a comprehensive fundraising campaign.

Operations– Oversees all Foundation administrative functions at the highest level, developing and overseeing an operating budget, directing strategic communications and messaging efforts for the Foundation in alignment with System marketing and communications. Gains consensus on and creates compelling philanthropic cases for system-wide support aligned with institutional vision and goals.

Assists the Foundation Board in defining the role of the Foundation members.

Stewardship Specialist

Position:
The vision of Design Outreach (DO) is to see marginalized and low-income communities transformed physically, economically, and spiritually. The mission is to alleviate global poverty through life-sustaining technology.

The Stewardship Specialist (SS) reports to the Chief Stewardship Officer (CSO) and helps to support all advancement activities.
• Collaborate with the CSO to implement the strategy for individual gift relationship management (track, manage, nurture, upgrade) to meet short and long-term fundraising goals of the organization.
• Develop long-term relationships to build on a firm understanding of donors’ interests, passions, and values as they relate to the mission of the organization.
• Engage, cultivate, and deepen a constituent’s relationship with DO to support the overall goals of the Advancement Office and CSO.
• Identify and reconnect unengaged constituent groups.
• Serve as liaison to DO by Identifying, engaging, and re-engaging constituents in central Ohio.

Key Responsibilities:
• Direct stewardship activities to assist with fundraising in central Ohio. The SS works closely with the CSO in all communication endeavors.

• Create, integrate, and implement short, intermediate, and long-term individual gifts from constituents.
• Utilize constituent relationship management system and fundraising software.

• Track and report relationship management activity by using constituent relationship database including identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of current and prospective donors.

Position Description

Associate Director of Development, Major Giving (College of Business)

The Associate Director of Development will serve as a major gifts officer on behalf of the Ohio University College of Business and for University Advancement. The successful candidate will be responsible for the identification of potential major-gift donors and will work directly with the College of Business Dean and Executive Advisory Board (EAB),and will coordinate activities and events to engage donors and prospective supporters.

The incumbent will also identify and engage regional development markets in collaboration with development colleagues; initiate first alumni contact for the dean, faculty and other administrators; maintain development travel schedules; and coordinate all development staff and gift stewardship activities with donor relations. The Associate Director will work closely with University Advancement’s Central Programs and Development offices on strategies for donors related to those gift vehicles; coordinate strategic development events; develop major gifts pipeline to build a qualified prospect base for the college; and serve as liaison between the faculty, staff, students, potential supporters (individuals, corporations and foundations), and the Office of the Vice President for Advancement.

Primary responsibilities include:
1. Serve as the development officer for the College of Business by managing and meeting priorities and goals that coincide with strategic plans as defined by University Advancement and the college. (25% of time)
2. Identify constituents that may provide private support to Ohio University while acting as fundraiser/strategist/advisor for the unit and/or project(s) and secure dollar commitment at a level established for said unit. (20% of time)
3. Work collaboratively with the Central Programs and Development staff as needed to verify, cultivate, and solicit constituents for major gifts for the university and work with appropriate campus offices to plan, implement, and oversee stewardship programs. (20% of time)
4. Plan, implement, and coordinate cultivation activities for prospects and donors. Initiate, develop, and coordinate delivery of proposals to prospective supporters. (20% of time)
5. Interface with the external relations agents (i.e. Alumni Relations, Development, Deans, and individual unit/project personnel) to coordinate events and activities involving alumni in the pursuit of identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major gift prospects. (15% of time)

LOCATION and TRAVEL:
– The incumbent will have the option to work from OHIO’s Advancement offices on the Athens and/or Dublin campuses and will be willing to travel to the Athens, Ohio, campus regularly (once or twice a month) for business meetings as well as for special events and/or donor visits. Additionally, the option for flexwork (including work from home) several days a week will be available.
– The Associate Director must have the ability and willingness to travel frequently.
